Timothy P. Cleland, MD., M.S.E.

Dr. Cleland is co-founder and President of Retina Associates of South Texas, PA, established in 1996. A board certified diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology and a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, he is skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of macular degeneration, vitrectomy for proliferative diabetic retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity and intraocular tumors. Dr. Cleland also is a member of the American Society of Retinal Specialists and holds an academic appointment as clinical associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Education and Training~
A graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo, Dr. Cleland majored in electrical engineering. He was a member of Eta Kappa Nu, the National Electrical Engineer Honor Society. After receiving his bachelor of science degree, he entered the master’s degree program in biomedical engineering at the University of Texas at Austin and was graduated in 1986. Dr. Cleland pursued his medical training at Texas Tech University, where he graduated with a medical degree in 1990. He then completed an internship in internal medicine and a three-year residency in ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Dr. Cleland received  his fellowship training in vitreo-retinal surgery at the Oschner Clinic in New Orleans, in 1995. Today, he continues to research and study new techniques and procedures in vitreo-retinal surgery to ensure the best quality service for his patients. Dr. Cleland has been named among “Best Doctors in America,” several years running.

Personal Notes~

Dr. Cleland was born in Syracuse, New York. Many of his family members still reside there. He is a licensed instrument-rated pilot and holds a single pilot type rating in a Citation Mustang. Dr. Cleland is married to Lina M. Marouf, MD, vice president of Retina Associates of South Texas, PA. Together, they have two children, Sami and Rea.
